Why do Americans hate Russians?

with 51 comments

So, the blog was up for 4 days now and here is some statistics… These are the terms that people used to find the blog.  5:1 victory goes to Hate”.

I have to say I am shocked and depressed to find that. Not even one search for Georgia… Looks like everything is even worse than I thought.

I think it is Russian’s turn to ask, why do Americans hate us so? I mean really where is all that fear and hatred is coming from? It made sense during Soviet times ideology and all, Commies trying to take over the bright and wondeful world of free people. Fair enough.

But I really thought it would get better by now. Do YOU not realize that Russia is not a bloody Mordor? That we don’t have a Dark Tower in the middle of Moscow. What is it that makes everyone so hatefull?

I am risking to start repeating myself but let me put it down one more time:

1. Russia does not want to take over the world. Because:

    a. Russia is just getting its economy restored. Why would it want to have a major war when it is such a major expense

    b. Any major war these days would involve Europe which is the major customer (70%) for Russian oil. Why would Russia destabilize relationship with its main customers

    c. Russia IS a part of Europe. Most Russians are afraid of Chinese expansion. Why would it attack its natural allies?

   d. Russians are not ideologically brainwashed. Noone is going to fight in a war that they perceive as agressive. Over the whole period of Soviet rule people believed that they were doing good. This is the part of Russian mentality, you don’t go and do bad stuff to others.

   e. Russian military budget is tiny compared to American! Do you realize that people? For the borders that Russia controls it is miniscular!

 f. Russia didn’t have any major military operations for the last 20 years or more.

2.  Russia is not a totalitarian place. Get it straight people Russia is just not the same as USSR. I think everyone is just getting all stupid when it comes to this word. “Totalitarian” – how repressive and scary! You know, when I think totalitarian I imagine people getting killed on the streets, I imagine something like an African country, or maybe a Middle Eastern country. It is not like that in Russia. People just live here, watch TV, read stuff on the Internet, argue about stuff. Many know and read in more than one language ( I bet not many of you know Russian heh). Many more travel to other countries at least once a year. What are you going to do if everyone in the country is suddenly feeling very “anti-west” because of the way West is acting not because people are been “forced” to take this opinion or brainwashed (no more than Americans are if you ask me).

3. And I have to repeat, Russia is not a bad place to live. Why do you think people in Russia don’t just all immigrate. Whoever wanted left already. Those who are left are quite happy with the place. Let me tell you about my experience. In Russia I feel the history. I feel connected to all those people who were building this place before me. I love that feel when you walk around settlements and churches that are 600+ years old.

So, tell me, why do you choose to make an enemy out of Russia? What did we do to you lately? To be honest, I think I know the answer. Russia is trying to crave the piece out for itself in the world that has only one winner. One place that consumes 24% of all world resources while having only 5% of world population. Naturally they can’t not being afraid when any major resource supplier is able to do more than just supply…

I have to say, I feel really bitter about USA lately. Looking at the way it manages its affairs abroad really dispels any of my notions about the democracy being somehow immune to violence and warmongering.

War against Afganistan was questionable but at least justifiable. The war in Iraq was a load of *** lies, fought with one purpose only -to bring Iraq Oil under the control of the “right” governement.

The way Pakistan has been pushed to the brink of war recently, the way Iran is just about to be attacked (it is not that I support Iran, but it is going to get a lot worse there after the attack the same as Iraq did).

http://blogs.reuters.com/pakistan/2008/09/14/facing-up-to-the-war-in-pakistan/

http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=5797904

And then whole NATO business. There is plenty of evidence that the only reason to expand it the east is to contain Russia.

 http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/bdffd9a6-7b71-11dd-b839-000077b07658.html

This is all fine, politics and national interests and all, but please, don’t give that crap about the democracy! This is so sick. Democracy is great, but it has nothing to do with national interest and it is no excuse to pursue them through military means. And why is there so much surprise and indignation when the country stands up and defends agains such obvious threats. Pah!!!

And now, check the out.

Pailin who is considered experienced because “Alaska is close to Russia” and “She understands what is at stake” and is probably going to be selected because Americans don’t believe in peaceful coexistence with the rest of the world is ready to go to war with Russia. This is just great. It looks like we are going to have some interesting years ahead of us!

Ahem… I am sorry if I got a bit too agitated here. I didn’t even want to bring that up, but this is just too much to keep inside.

  1. Could not have said it better. Not that I hate America, but The evil commie steriotype has got to go. It’s sad seeing this in 2009. Yes, there are many problems in Russia, that’s what happens when you have a cenury of war, revolution and perestroyka, just give us some time, and don’t let yourselfes be brainswashed, we are not such nasty monsters as you were told! Unless, of course, some people are too comfortable believing that there’s an evil enemy that they need to save the world from.

    • Hey Russia – study YOUR history!!!! Do you remember those missiles you put in cuba to take out AMERICA in the 1950’s? I do!

AMERICA does NOT START wars, but we sure as hell WILL END them!

      FIGURE IT OUT!

      • In the end they didn’t put missiles on Cuba. So they choose not to gamble with nuclear war (whole world would suffer) in favor to have thair military power increase. Glade to hear friendly USA wouldn’t do that if situation was reversed.. hm wait does USA now try to put (peace) missles in Europe (Turkey, Romania etc.)? And I am glade that Russia don’t invest big part of economy just to build weapons and war machines like some evil imperial super state while thair citizens live in economy crisis and now is more similar to friendly USA.. hm wait does USA now spend more on military than Russia, evil commies Chine,Europe and whole world together while having economy crisis?! Also I am glade that civilians in some parts of our world don’t get hurt or die because radioactive poisoning from Russia bombs and ammo what I can also expect from USA 21st century army right ?

    • Your father is in Poland? Is he Polish? Polish have been under the Soviet Ego during the Red Years, it’s a genetic imprint on their sociological makeup – they do not like Russians, period, a conjecture concluded from personal observation. Same goes for Czechs. No one who experienced the Red Scare is going to like Russians, trust me. We need time to wash history which is quite thoroughly saturated with blood away…

  3. With every generation after us and after the next, these ideas will soon disappear and there will be less hate for each other’s countries. I don’t think that the younger generation’s grandchildren will be thinking much about this subject, they will be smarter and probably won’t give a damn about the petty past bullshit. HOPEFULLY. Now everyone quit your bitchin’. from an American with a Russian fiance.

  4. I am 100% Russian and i love mi country very much. I am really tired of Americans being so racist against Russia. i dont hate america and neither do i know any other russian that hates america. What else really bothers me is that all the movies made with russians attacking all the people. Russia has never made a movie in which america is evil so wy is america macking such movies about Russia?not just movies, movies are the least of mi consern, but the people hummiliating us inpublic! One day i was in a store and this woman noticed me talking in russian to my friend. she didnt do anything at first but there was another woman infront of her that was having problems with the cridit card, so that woman noticed the long line in the back so she said im sorry im holding up the line, the woman that noticed that we were russian at first before she heard us talk complained and now she said thi ” oh its ok im sure the russians can wait” ovcourse i got pissed off and said “excuseme ” sheanswered “you heard me russian” then i answered “why are you bringging in my nationality into this” and then she said something that really made me mad “go back to russia you soviet freack and take your friend with you. What are you doing in america in the first place” it surprised me that she talked like that to a thirteen year old like that and it also surprised me that how racist she is.

    • Depending on where that happened, she might have had a negative experience with the russian community. Russians in the States act very chinese, they do not assimilate, but form bonds which quite often do not conform to the legal standards. Americans feel threatened, when they see their ‘poor’ neighbors during their initial years in this country driving BMW and Lexus and Mercedes, and at the same time drawing Welfare dollars which are American tax dollars. I’d be p!ssed too, but again, she might have been quite illiterate to have called you Soviet) Hmm, forgive and forget?

and that whole anti-assimlation bullshit….listen, my parents try to assimulate me like theres no tomorrow (although it doesnt really work;;)
but all these negetive American views are really bothering me! why cant we just all chill out?

oh, and btw I don’t have a BMW or a Mercedes (although that would be really nice)

  5. wow about the video with sarah palin….i was visiting russia when they invaided georgia…and it wasnt “unprevoked” as she said. Georgian military had came to a small Russian town next to the border and began a genocide…..

but anyway, russophobia sucks!!! I’m an American-Raised Russian, and I NEVER hear anti-american comments or anything. It’s always from the Americans I hear all this hate and fear about Russia (even from some of my teachers) it really saddens me and I really feel offendend, as would anyone at a xenophobic comment.

Why can’t we all just grow up and get along?

  7. I’m American and have no problem with Russia. I’m actually thinking of studying abroad there. I think all the hatred towards Russia comes from the propaganda (the ‘red scares’) in America during the communist regime. I think a lot of these ideas of propaganda have been passed down to younger generations. I also notice that most Americans think of Russia as the U.S.S.R., not sure why. (although, putin trying to take over all of the russian media isn’t helping things). Russia’s a beautiful country and the people I’ve encountered from there are awesome.

  9. I am an American, 26 years old, and I don’t know anyone who does not like Russia or it’s people. But, I live in the U.S. State Oklahoma and our mentality is different here then in other parts of the country. I like anyone that is a good person.

I confess that I don’t know a great deal about Russia. I have always been interested, though. While the people around me have talked about learning Spanish or Chinese, I have always wanted to learn to speak Russian. I have started to speak and understand a little. I have tried to find movies and books from Russia, but they are not very easy to find here.I only have an English translation of “The Brothers Karamazov”.

The only way I have been able to learn anything so far is on sites like this. On some I have heard things that are very disturbing to me. Please do not think Russia is hated by America. There are many of us, some bad, but also a lot of good. It is that way, I think, everywhere.

  10. I have never been to Russia. I have always had an open mind to foreigners here, especially Europeans, as I am also a French citizen and much of my family lives there. As I am European in race, I am connected to the land and its peoples, and since America’s classical culture is the brainchild of England, Germany, and the Enlightenment I am proud to persue our principles, and as an American am I am proud to be one. I also identify as Libertarian. But lately I have had some bad experiences with Russian immigrants here, one particularly bad one was with a women; a romantic encounter gone so terribly wrong it was sickening to experience it – left me beyond shocked. You wouldn’t believe it. With other Russians I have found calous types, manipulative and lying. They try to confuse you sometimes, so that you may be so perplexed with them that you eventually give up and force yourself to believe they are just a certain way and then they surprise you. I have found many to be backstabbing liars. One day they’ll keep their word, the next day they’ll break it without the slightest concience. I find many to be relatively unvalued people, with a skewed sence of morality, and with a sneaky opportunism that they cloak by speaking openly about “Russian mentality” and how they they distance themselves from “those typical Russians who lie and steal”. How can I believe that?! And what about Russian organized crime? Any gang and mafia activity is horrible, but gangs and mafias of foreigners is intollerable. And they have the nerve to operate wherever they choose, and of course, they help second generation Russians at the expense of true Americans. Many have often tried to act all so wise and lecture me about America, – sneaky bastards. Who do they think they are? Half of them are still communist believers and supporters, their government is crime incarnate, (and most former soviet officials). I find that the natural Russian soul is mostly out of line with our Western one. Even before Communism in Russia there were large communal farms and the seeds of Communism were sown far before the revolution. Many claim to be devout Christians, but their Eastern Orthodox is not true Christianity, and it doesn’t seem to disallow their criminal and immoral behavior. Very Un-American: adapt to our culture or leave!

They are not in line with the principles of Human Freedom, and are bound to petty, primitive, collectivist pseudo nationalism that they stop following the moment it isn’t profitable to them. So many people think Russians are ‘chic’ and ‘interesting’. In general they are unthinkably terrible.

Although there are good Russian folk, and I’m sure many natives who still live there are great people, so many immigrants to this country are out right bastards and even evil and are certainly not to be trusted.

Remember the cold war. Think of them as invaders, leeches to our open arms of trust and welcome. They use us and spit us out when they can, and they do not deserve our hard earned opportunities. They do not deserve to be here.

  11. I’m an American and actually I love Russia! I am learning Russian and am actually hoping to live in Russia one day. I like America but there is no culture at all here. The reason most Americans hate Russians is becuase they are either arrogant Суки or they think Russia is still a communist superpower. If they knew the truth then they would realize Russians are some of the nicest people in the world.

  12. I LIKE THE RUSSIANS WHILE IM NOT A RACIST IT MAKES ME SAD TO THINK SOME DAY THERE WILL BE NO MORE WHITE PEOPLE IN THE USA.. BECAUSE OF INTER RACIAL DATING THE IMMAGRATION POLICES NOT BEING ENFORCED. AND WHITES NOT HAVING CHILDREN.. AT LEAST I KNOW IN RUSSIA THE WHITE RACE WILL BE IN EXISTANCE FOR SOME TIME AFTER THE WHITE POPULATION IN THE USA HAS DISAPPEARED.

  13. First thing I’d like to say is Sarah Palin is an idiot, most Americans think so too, exception being the conservative right wingers who belong to the Tea Party. I’m not Russia-phobic but I also never keenly interested in Russian Culture, however I have met and worked with many Russian Immigrants in America and housed a Russian Pen Pal in my home for a summer. I do think that anti-Russian sentiment is much stronger with the “Baby Boomer” generation (the people in their mid 50s to late 60s). They grew up in a world where Russia and more specifically Communism was viewed as the Big Bag Wolf, something to be feared. Much of this was due to propaganda and of course the arms race between both countries. I think (in some cases) the bias has softened a bit with generations, and hopefully will continue to over time. However, this also greatly depends on the media and politics. The pessimist in me won’t hold my breath.

My experience with Russians has been both good and bad. I’ve encountered some that live up to the stereotype of being very Nationalistic, deceptive, arrogant, ego centric, and xenophobic (once had a Russian tell me her daughter would never marry an American as it would pollute the culture). However, Americans have little room to criticize in this are, we can be very arrogant, brash, and Nationalistic. Many Americans live up to their stereotype that is prevalent across Europe. There are people in every culture who do. The student who stayed with my family came from a wealthy family in Russia who was very pro-Putin and believed he would establish the old Soviet system in Russia. Her family hated the “new” Russia. Every morning at 5am we’d hear the Russian National Anthem playing from her room. There was a huge learning curve for her and me through this process, and yes, she did lie…a lot. However our “clashes” (which were discussions about our differing cultures) were nothing compared to the Russian-Russian and the Russian-Romanian clash I witnessed.

By and large I don’t think Americans specifically hate Russians. I think our tendency (both Americans and Russians) to be very Nationalistic is a large part of the “Russia-America Hate” relationship. Yes there are a lot of people who have bad experiences with Russians, however I’m sure there are just as many Russians who have had bad experiences with Americans. Likewise, America isn’t the only one who has a “hate” relationship with Russia. Many of my friends in the UK, Germany, and Romania all say there isn’t a whole lot of Russia love in their countries either. They all agree that a lot of it has to do with a cultural gap. If there is a cultural gap between Russia and other European Counties, the gap between Americans and Russians is likely enormous.

Did I have some bad experiences with Russians? Yes (try cleaning up a financial disagreement with the IRS when the Russian in question is in Russia and not communicating with you). Does that mean I hate them? No. Our cultures are very different, throw in that we’re both proud of our countries, that can lead to conflict.

  17. Americans hate us because they are scared we will end their parasitic capitalist existance in this world. “Russia isn’t Communist”… for god’s sake, on last election third of Russia including me personally voted for the Communist Party. There are many many Communists and Socialists in Russia, much more than “democrats”, monarchists and liberals. So don’t say that we are not Communist believers, because you exclude half of Russian population out of existance. Yes we were and will be Communist. So what? Is it bad being different? Is it bad wanting equal rights for women and workers of the world? Is it bad wanting workers get the same treatment as the so called modern day nobility? You all are so goddamn ignorant!!! It really ticks me off just listening to your complains about how Communism tried to take over the world – first of all, we NEVER entered a country militarywise without their permission!!! NEVER! The people of those countries CHOSE to change their corrupt governments! We just gave them money and supplies. If it was the majority’s of those countries like Vietnam, Korea, China, etc, choice to become friends with USSR and become Communist, what is it to you??!! ITS NONE OF YOUR GODDAMN YANKEE BUSINESS!! Other countries can manage their own lives without you. But then what do we see with the “freedom bringing” usa?? Oh right…. bombings. murders. Genocide of civilians. You INVADE other countries to make them follow you, because you know that they never will. We never had to invade anyone to make them follow socialism. They WANTED TO.

If i recieve hating comments that will just confirm my words. I do hope American public will open their eyes and see who was and is an Evil Empire here. Why won’t you try spending your money or something like childcare or schooling or science if you have nothing to fear from Russia? You woudnt need a military budget that huge if all your allies followed you out of good own will. They don’t. They are scared of you. They are scared that if they say a word you will murder them too just like Koreans and Vietnamese. Thats why a huge military. THat’s why half budget goes to army. Russia still has allies like China and even North Korea believe it or not. We don’t spend such a huge ammount on our army even though we could, because we DONT NEED TO. WE are devouted to PEACE. We dont need to bully our allies into following our lead, because they WANT to follow us.

    • I think the big reason why Americans have a large issue with communism is because of the form of it that was shown to the world, a dictatorship that wiped out millions of people in order to reach its ‘goals’ of communism with lenin, mao, trotsky and stalin killing/arresting people because they disagreed with the current government (sounds somewhat like modern america now, as far as arrests go, haven’t really heard of any executions yet though).
Also, chechnya is hardly a shining spot on russia’s military operations.
Really, russia and usa (governments, not people) are both bad because they’ve both got governments and will continue to be so as long as the governments exist. A government’s inherent desire is power, power, and more power. A government has no morality. It will attempt to fulfill its desires at whatever cost. Time and time again its shown throughout history this is what a government will eventually do. Rome is a very excellent example starting off as a small city state, conquering land, trying to get more power etc etc and finally dying.
“If men are good, you don’t need government; if men are evil or ambivalent, you don’t dare have one.”

  18. I think it has to do with the fact that some Americans or “Americans”, rather, view Russians as primitive or inferior. They don’t really hate Russians for the Cold War, space exploration and so on. It’s more like bullying the bullshit.

  19. “Depending on where that happened, she might have had a negative experience with the russian community. Russians in the States act very chinese, they do not assimilate, but form bonds which quite often do not conform to the legal standards.”

Even if you’re completely independent from any community in the US, speak English really well and quite Americanized, you can still become a target for “Russian” harassment. It’s usually reversed. In this case, they’ll be telling you to go live in the Russian community or go back to your country. As a Russian, it’s very difficult to win here in any situation.

  20. ” think the big reason why Americans have a large issue with communism is because of the form of it that was shown to the world, a dictatorship that wiped out millions of people in order to reach its ‘goals’ of communism with lenin, mao, trotsky and stalin killing/arresting people because they disagreed with the current government (sounds somewhat like modern america now, as far as arrests go, haven’t really heard of any executions yet though).”

First of all, from what I observed in the US, it’s really hard to view many of its inhabitants as American. America is an idea. Not that many people can live up to its standards especially when it comes to restraining their compulsions to perpetuate cruelty and abuse. Being truly American, by all means excludes things like these because there are plenty of those outside the US, and that’s the reason why immigrants come here hoping to find the opportunity to focus on creating a better life instead of fighting off all that evil. Some of them are more or less benign as their political views, but for the most part, these people leave much to be desired.

Secondly, communism in its pure form, is a utopian idea. Just like America. If people do not allow it to become a reality, it will never become possible. USSR was on its way to creating a truly communist society, which presupposes equality, freedom and no monetary freedom but got ruined by those that do not measure up. Calling USSR communist is just another form of reversed bullying. It’s like calling a hobo “god”.

  21. Correction: Communism presupposes no monetary system, not monetary freedom. You get real freedom when you relieve yourselves from financial constraints, and replace monetary system with something better and more efficient. “Star Trek” has some great ideas on that. (You can totally understand why those guys decided to leave the earth)

  22. And what about all those aliens living on the territory of the US? You can always hang out with those…I had very successful interaction with Polish and Japanese people, for instance. I guess, if you are advanced enough as an individual, these kind of people find you interesting. However, do not expect attention, if you are some kolhoznik Vanya from some technology deprived villiage, where you don’t even have television to even know that there is a country like the US out there… I see a lot of those Vanyas in the US, and always wonder how it even occurred to them to come here. That still remains a mystery for me. Must be some covert US mission to draw more slaves into the US. You know that those are probably used effectively for medical research to benefit the best people living in the US…

The major problem about being a foreigner in the US, either from Russia, Poland or anywhere else, is that people born and raised here, start projecting other people from your country on you, forgetting about the fact that there is complexity within each smaller group as well. There are always better and worse, smarter and dumber, better looking and uglier looking people within a certain country, which can be broken into even smaller groups….Oh, man…This is so awful!!!

  23. Well I had nothing against Russians until a lot of them started moving into the condos I have lived in for over 20 years. My experience with them has been nothing but unfavorable. I have caught them stealing packages and furnature off my porch. The old ones give dirty looks and stare at us while the young ones point at me when I wear a dress and stare like perverts. My neighbor who I am forced to park next to due to assigned spaces is Russian and has hit my car 3 times causing a lot of damage. When it is obvious due to evidence left behind that he hit my car and the fact that I only move my car about once a month he flat out lies and says he did not hit my car. My mother picks up donated food from a small grocery store for her senior center and the food is put out once a weel at 6am outside behind the store. Some Russians saw this and soon a large group would show up each week and they would just take this food which is suppose to be going to low income seniors. One of the men threatened my mom and told her to stay away. I am sorry but enough said. I have yet to meet one who was honest, respectful, and civil. They really need to go back to their own country if they want to behave like this and not act like they are above Americans. They absolutely discust me.

    • I have to say, it sounds very much like what you hear in Russia in regards to Uzbek immigrants. I guess it is something with coming to a different society while still not associating with it or its values that makes people behave like that…

  24. No hate comments do not confirm anything. If Russians don’t want people thinking bad of them than stop acting rude, dishonest, and criminal. I never dislike anyone based on past history or without experience interacting with the people. I have had quite a lot of experience interacting with Russians of all ages and I can only say that the young generation, usually born here, are the only ones I have met who act deceint and civil.

  25. И почему американцы так не любят русских? Боятся наверное……

    • Они патриоты своей страны и этом им свойственно. Ведь они должны любить только свой народ и страну.

  26. Republicans started wars long before we were born. The United States fighting against the Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico is the first time when the United States made our foreign policies and our imperialism put to place. I have views of the centre-left and I hate Russia as well. Wars are necessary when they strike us first, but we’re not sending our families in uniforms to the land with the tons of vodka drinking Ivans, Natashas and Jihadist Pavlovs. I like to see when they come into our land and boom! Goes the grizzlies… in a satisfying meat from a can. Hahahaha, I like to see Putin burn in hell, suffering in shackles like every hell-loving citizens such as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden as well as Franklin Delano Roosevelt with Cerberus and the Grim Reaper laughing maniacally at him. That’s my kind of American revolution, putting evil men to hell, bring society back to order.

    • I read a lot of comments, very interesting. I’m a seaman, and I can see how much America changed sins 1109. Now this country become like enemy witch look to every vessel like threate , because there are afraid. They put there nose in every place in the world where it is possible to spark the war , just to spend the money for supporting dollar. Dollar nowadays is nothing- just a paper, because it is not supported by gold or oil or something else. America has nothing. That is why america fighting allaround the world. There is no enemies -this is the only money problem. Soon you will fill that America is not a God- you just a country- small piece in this world. Russia now become stronger and americans dos’nt like it. Of course this is the reason to start the war in Ukrane. I hate you for this. I met a lot of people around the world – and I saw only few who likes America. Ask yourself what did you do that all world hate you?
